What Causes Jock Itch?

Terrasil Jock Itch Treatment

Jock itch occurs when fungus is present, and it is trapped in moist areas of the body. Fungus needs moisture to grow, which is why it develops so commonly in the skin crevices of athletes who are often sweating for long periods of time, day after day. When your skin has prolonged exposure to wetness and friction, it leads to the growth of fungus and jock itch. Jock itch, like all other fungal infections, can be spread by clothing, bedding, and towels.

Risk factors for developing jock itch include:

  • You have a greater chance of developing jock itch if you are male, although women can also get the condition.
  • If you wear tight underwear or athletic supporters that aren't washed after each use. These garments trap bacteria within the fabric.
  • Obese people typically have more folds in their skin surrounding their groin and buttocks. These folds may trap moisture and fungus causing the development of jock itch.
  • People who tend to perspire heavily.
  • Those with impaired immune systems.
  • Someone with athlete's foot is more prone to contracting jock itch.
  • Those who have atopic dermatitis; a chronic skin condition, carry a higher risk for jock itch.
