There are several variations folliculitis, and each type of infection is characterized by different symptoms. If you think you’ve been experiencing folliculitis symptoms, contact a medical professional and start researching treatments for folliculitis.
Mild folliculitis, or superficial folliculitis, affects the upper part of the hair follicle. Folliculitis symptoms appear as small, red, fluid-filled bumps that are raised and appear around the root of the infected hair. The bumps may cause an itching or burning sensation, and drain pus or blood when scratched. The affected area is often inflamed, irritated and rash-like in appearance.
Mild folliculitis symptoms tends to disappear on their own within a couple of weeks.
Deep folliculitis symptoms can infect the entire hair follicle. This condition is considered serious, and folliculitis treatments can be difficult with this type. Deep folliculitis symptoms include larger, swollen, pus-filled bumps that are painful. The folliculitis bumps may leave scars after they have healed, depending on the severity of the hair follicle infection.
Deep folliculitis is often a precursor for more severe skin infections including furuncles or boils, and carbuncles (clusters of boils). These deep infections exist when bacteria travels into the hair follicle, resulting in skin lumps that can be very painful. The red, pus-filled lumps grow larger until they disrupt or are drained, and may lead to scarring.
Hot tub folliculitis may result from time spent from hot tubs, public baths or pools that have not been properly treated. It is caused by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, which thrives in warm, wet environments.
Hot tub folliculitis signs and symptoms include small, itchy, red bumps covering any part of the body exposed to the water. These bumps may cover a large part of the body. The rash can appear several hours to 2 days after initial exposure to the bacteria, and typically clears on its own.
Pseudofolliculitis barbae (also known as folliculitis barbae, shaving rash or razor bumps) produces small, red bumps in the beard area as a result of shaving. Ingrown facial hairs curve and grow back into the skin. This causes folliculitis symptoms such as redness and inflammation. Once the ingrown hairs have had time to grow out, the condition will usually resolve itself, and the folliculitis symptoms will disappear. This may take 3-4 weeks.
