Athlete's foot is highly contagious. And in some cases, athlete’s foot may take a few rounds of consistent treatment before the infection clears, so prevention is an excellent option. Follow these tips to prevent athlete’s foot:

  • Wash feet daily with antifungal soup.
  • Use on antifungal powder on your feet daily before putting on socks and shoes.
  • Dry feet thoroughly after showering, swimming, or bathing.
  • Change out of moist socks and sneakers.
  • Avoid letting feet linger in dampness for long period of times.
  • If possible, allow you feet to breathe by wearing sandals.
  • Always wear cotton socks to absorb moisture and promote airflow to the feet.
  • Wear socks made of natural fibers, as they absorb excess moisture.
  • When possible, wear socks indoors to shield the feet from fungus.
  • Wear shower shoes in public showers, locker rooms, and poolside.
  • Give your feet a 12-24 hour barefoot break in between wearing shoes.
  • After a shower, avoid drying your groin with the same towel as your feet. Athlete’s foot can spread to the groin and cause jock itch. Use a separate towel to dry feet and avoiding sharing towels with other people.
  • Wash socks with bleach and cold water. Hot water dilutes the fungi-killing efficacy of bleach. Wear wider shoes that offer more room for the toes. This allows better air-flow and drier feet.
  • For those with recurrent cases of athlete’s foot, keep toes separate from each other by weaving lamb’s wool in between the toes. Lamb’s wool for this purpose is available at most pharmacies.

Knowing the locations that pose the highest risk for athlete’s foot will help prevent the spread of fungus. To learn more about preventing athlete’s foot; head to our athlete’s foot resources page.
