What is Acne?

Reports show that 40 to 50 million people in the United States have acne at any one time. Acne is the collection of small, usually hard, inflamed spots on the skin. The individual spots may be referred to as pimples, zits, or pustules.

Our skin contains sebaceous glands, which secrete oil and lubricate hair follicles. When sebaceous glands clog with dead skin cells or too much oil, the clog will lead to the appearance of inflamed spots.

Not all acne will present the same symptoms. In fact, there are three major types of acne: blackheads or whiteheads, papules or pustules, and nodule or cysts. Treatment varies depending on the causes and symptoms.

Characteristics of each type of acne are as follows:

Papules & Pustules

Nodules & Cysts

Cases of acne may last a few days, while others may linger for years. Acne is common for teenagers and nearly everyone will experience even mild acne at some point in their lives.
